Who? Ten Members of Holy Cross

What? A Mission Trip to Matanzas, Cuba

When? March 18-24, 2017

Our missionaries will discover a place unlike anywhere they’ve ever served, where the local church is vibrant, passionate, and rapidly growing, all under the rule of an anti-religion, communist government. It will be a chance to experience the real Cuba while interacting with Christians and churches of many different denominations, investing in relationships with local people, and serving in a variety of ways.

The trip is being led by parishioner Dave Huempfner and logistics will be arranged by a Christian organization - Experience Missions- that is well-experienced in sending mission groups to Cuba.

Our team will have the opportunity to work alongside community members and show God's love through serving together in many ways.  Some of those opportunities will be through a combination of Agricultural Production Ministry projects where we may build additions to supplement the local community’s farm or help plant/harvest mangos, guavas, papayas, and pineapple on this farm. In addition to these service projects our time will also be working on behalf of Jesus through outreach ministries to the local community’s families by conducting a Kids Club and by ministering to those children with mental & physically disabilities.

Team members are working together to raise the $17,000 needed to support this trip by Wednesday, November 23rd. contact Dave Huempfner at dhuempfner@gmail.com with questions about this mission.

This is our first Mission to Cuba at Holy Cross, but our Partner organizer Experience Missions has provided the following video to give an idea what our missionaries can expect going to Cuba.

Meet the Mission Team

GROVER BLACKWELL

My name is Grover Blackwell and I am honored to represent Holy Cross in our mission to Cuba. I am in my early 50’s and earn a living as an outside sales representative. My wife, Julie, and I have been married for 13 years and have been members at Holy Cross for those 13 years. Between us, we have 5 children, 2 daughter-in-laws, and one granddaughter.
Julie and I have been praying for an opportunity to serve the Lord on a mission trip. This seems to be the one He has been calling us for.

I feel like I am being called to work with the children in the Kids’ Club and help the families of the special needs children in Cuba. I am looking forward to the opportunity to work on the farm to help cultivate the physical fruits, as well as the spiritual fruits, of our Lord. I am hoping this will be the first of many mission trips in my future!

JULIE BLACKWELL

My name is Julie Blackwell and I am honored to represent Holy Cross in our mission to Cuba. I am 52 years old and have been a CCSD school teacher for 27 years. My husband, Grover, and I have been married for 13 years and have been members at Holy Cross for those 13 years. Between us, we have 5 children, 2 daughter-in-laws, and one granddaughter. Grover and I have been praying for an opportunity to serve the Lord on a mission trip ever since our vacation to Eleuthera 3 years ago. After just a few days of immersing ourselves in their culture, we realized that although the people of Eleuthera have very few material possessions and may seem poor to outsiders, they are HUGE in their Christian faith!
As a 2nd grade teacher, I feel like I am being called to work with the children in the Kids’ Club and help the families of the special needs children in Cuba. While I don’t know a lot about agriculture, I am certainly willing to learn for the sake of these families.

PJ BUCETI

I am a father of 3 wonderful children; Joe, Bella, and Lily. I have been married to my wife, Holly, for 16 years. I came to faith in Christ at a young age and the Lord has used me in previous missionary opportunities including 5 trips to Mexico and 1 to Spain. These trips had a profound impact on my faith and allowed me the opportunity to learn and speak the Spanish language.

The profound theologian, John Piper, has stated that believers “are to go, send, or disobey”. It is my desire to seek opportunities where the Lord may lead me to serve Him on another mission trip, where the harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Like King David, I seek to be a man after God’s own heart and look forward to whatever the Lord has in store for our team in Cuba.

Paige and Barry Emerson

My name is Paige Emerson. I am a 14 year old 8th grader at Palmetto Christian Academy and I love to play volleyball and tennis. I am going with my dad, Barry Emerson, who is a huge sports fanatic. He is active in the church as a lay reader and helps with AV. We have been members of Holy Cross for many years. Our family is a big believer in trying to fulfill the Great Commission. We have done mission work locally and have even traveled to Belize in Central America as a family to install a Water Missions Living Water Treatment System. My dad loves to give us opportunities to go out and spread the gospel and is always looking for new opportunities. It looks like we found a GREAT opportunity. This will be our first mission trip as just dad and daughter, and I couldn’t be more excited. I am looking forward to our days together painting, farming, and loving on our soon to be new friends in Cuba.

MARGARET EMMANS

My name is Margaret Emmans. I had a career in nursing. During that time, I worked in surgery helping indigent children that needed cleft palate and lip repairs though a state program at migrant health clinics. I had a job at DHEC where I wore many hats: Maternal and Child health, Immunizations, TB, HIV/AIDS Counseling. While employed there, I worked with a hard working humble Christian woman named Maria from Cuba. Maria's thoughts were of her own family and the hardships they endured because of the former Cuban dictator's reign. She sent money and care packages of things that we take for granted, but that they were not even allowed to purchase in Cuba. My heart was touched by her never ending faith and sense of hope. Hebrews 6:18-19 describes her well. I longed to go to Cuba to serve these people, even though their government would not even allow a church to be built.

I had been checking into a group that travels to different countries to do missionary work when that evening I ran into my friends Julie and Grover Blackwell and they told me they were going on a missionary trip to Cuba. I knew God was waiting for the right time and the right people for me to share his work and adventure with. I contacted Dave Huempfner and knew this was for me. I am excited to be answering God's call to Cuba. I know serving the people will be a powerful awakening experience. I am grateful for this journey to serve the Lord and his people, and ask for your prayers. I had not forgotten Maria and her hope after all these years and my dream to go to Cuba to help her people. Hoped deferred makes the heart sick but a dream fulfilled is a tree of Life (Proverbs13:12).
